Alriiigghhtt, another process journallllll.

The image above is an example of the two ways that I treat Victors hair. I like both and normally just decide between the two based on how I feel about each individual image. For this one I really liked the line art and wanted to do a solid black fill so I could preserve it. When I do full pencil shading on hair, it largely erases the initial lines. After I finished the panel however, I felt like additional work on the hair would be nice, so I ended up fully shading it. I saved both versions just to compare and contrast.

As you can see with the interior of the temple, I drew the original image without people in the benches. In my brain this was easier (???) because I have a lot of difficulty with perspective and sizing. After drawing the benches and having their spacing all laid out I could then figure out how the crowd should look and popped them in in photoshop. My brother was watching me do this over my should and later told me I am insane. Hhaha.

Is my level of neurosis a problem at this point?? Who knows. ┐( ̄・o・)┌

The fact that you can still show us the ‘lost art’ in these process pages I think makes it worthwhile, even if yeah you would probably save time by not finishing parts you fully intend to conceal with people on the finished product. If it’s easier for you to make your pages by ‘wasting time’ on hidden areas then it’s not necessarily wasted after all, in terms of the headache doing it the logical way might inflict on you. A happy medium might be to leave the areas intended to be covered as line art, and don’t bother shading anything that could potentially be covered by people and props. Thankfully layering in Photoshop doesn’t give you the added heartache of worn thin paper nor bench-lines peeking through your worshippers.

This process page made me think of those art documentaries where they X-ray paintings and find things like a happy smile behind the enigmatic portrait of Lisa.
If one day your work is ever unearthed from, say, a nuclear bunker (XD) then the humans of the future might find the pews behind the people, and critics will nod wisely at your dedication and depth. Some of them will say you did it for a reason, and many will argue that empty pews was the original intention, as a meaningful commentary on the dwindling of religiosity in modern society! etc. etc. waffle waffle.. more wine!

OH yes I am very happy to be able to show more of my process and versions of the pages that might have been. I always love how the pencil drawings look and want to be able to show them with the finished pages, but this new aspect of showing incomplete or all together unused panels is very nice for me indeed. Definitely makes all the extra love and care feel worthwhile.

Hahah well if my photoshop files survive then there wont be much investigation to do. I save everything! Every version! Every layer! O__O
I love what you said about them analyzing the intention behind the empty pews though…hrmmm.. ( ✧ – ✧)
